WHACK!
just outside dashur

these kids trailed me as i meandered along a canal waiting for the military to allow foreigners into the saqqara area.  begging and staring, these kids would oft get to close to the strange man walking through their village.  one of the larger kids would give a small whack from a stick to the kids if they pressed in to close to me.  don't know if he was trying to protect me, or them :-).  the first time he whacked one of these kids, i exclaimed "WHACK", and laughed.  the kids looked at me and said "WHACK", to which i replied "WHACK" which in turn made them say "WHACK" again.  we went on along like this "WHACK"ing ourselves giggling silly for near half a kilometer.  every time the bigger kid hit one of the smaller ones, they'd all yell out "WHACK" and giggle hysterically.  soon, if i just yelled out "WHACK" the kids would run away a little.  they probably went home that night and told their mom's of the strange "WHACK"o that walked by.

fair?
taxi, outside dashur

all taxi's in cairo come equipped with roughly the same non-functional yet highly ornamental fare meter.  i tired buying one from my driver but apparently the fare box was sort of a license for the cab.  without one, you weren't legal... not that the typical driver was too worried about ethics, but on this count guess they were.

descending to death
dashur

to get to the burial chamber one descends this 45° 1 meter tall shaft about a hundred meters, then up the same incline to get to something that really isn't worth seeing (except for just the sheer experience of doing it) the insides of the pyramids are hot, stuffy, humid, and claustrophobic.

bent
dashur

the famous, or maybe not so famous, bent pyramid.  builders started building the pyramid at one angle, then discovered it was too step, causing the rocks to fall out.  mid way through, they correct they angle, leaving the pyramid looking bent.
