Like any other capital city, Sofia is all that is Bulgaria, yet it is not Bulgaria. Visiting New York City does not mean you've seen the entire state of New York. Just so, Sofia has all that Bulgaria has to offer, yet it is only a small slice of Bulgarian life.

Rising majestically in the background, Mt. Vitosha,
just a short 8km away has been called the lungs of Sofia. Here you can
retreat to the mountains and forget for a second you live in Bulgaria's
largest city. In the foreground is Sveta Nedelya Cathedral. |

Towering Alexander Nevski Church, pays homage to
the more than 200,000 Russian soldiers that gave their lives to help free
Bulgaria from Turkish rule. |

Graced with wide boulevards and immaculate
flower gardens, Sofia is a delight to wander around. |

| No visit to Sofia would be complete without
spending a few hours wandering around the Lady's Market. The name
appears to have no relevance to the types of sellers, buyers or goods that
frequent this market. |

The food and goods sold here are inexpensive and
good quality, and they are only surpassed by the people watching
opportunities. |

On the other side of town, near Alexander Nevsky
Church is this small flea market where you can pick up a vintage Leica
camera or perhaps a WWII fighter pilot's helmet. |
