Arriving in Plovdiv by bus, passing blocks and blocks of modern concrete apartment buildings and old gray Soviet-style monstrosities as well, your first inclination is to think you made the wrong choice in coming here. Thankfully the "new" town of Plovdiv is just the shell on the egg meant for protection. Protected inside the shell is the old town where you'll find steep-winding cobblestone streets that lead through Bulgarian historical buildings and better yet, ancient Roman ruins! Old town Plovdiv is easy to explore on foot with sunny cafes, tree-lined shopping streets and beautifully frescoed churches.

amphitheatre, the Bulgarians restored it, and it can now be enjoyed for
summer concerts and plays. |
