Bansko is one of the most well known mountain retreats in Bulgaria.  Within an easy drive south of Sofia, it features excellent summer and winter recreation activities.  Skiing, of course, in the winter, and stupendous hiking and wilderness activities in the warm summer months.

 		Can't find your hotel when you arrive in town?  Never fear, the locals are friendly and willing to help.  If they can't direct you to your hotel verbally, they'll most likely walk you there.

 		The summer's warm, and autumn has just begun but it's not to early to start stockpiling up on firewood for the coming winter months.  Everywhere throughout town private residences, small Pensions/Hotel's and Mehanas (traditional restaurants) are stockpiling firewood for cozy winter fireplaces.

Not only must you stay warm in winter, but one needs food as well.  Here, chilies hang to dry for easy storage in the winter months.

 		Another common task is preparing peppers for the winter.  Here, the proprietor of a small Pension has just finished blow-torch cooking the peppers.  Next, they are skinned and stored.

 		The central clock tower in town is rung hourly.  No common dong-dong of bells here.  School boys play a melody on the different pitched bells.  In the background, some of Bulgaria's highest mountains wait for hikers to enjoy them.




Even the chickens for sale in the market have a good view of the wilderness beckoning.  All manner of goods can be purchased in the market.  Everything from designer jeans to truck tires to TVs to horse halters are priced to go.

After strolling through the market, peruse for postcards to show your friends and family where you've been.

 		Or maybe watch your kids as they frolic in this inflatable-wonderland setup in the town square.

 		By now you might be getting hungry and there's plenty of freshly prepared food with friendly locals dishing it up.
